Official Course Description: BIO 106 is an introduction for students to basic concepts and unifying principles of cellular biology, genetics, and molecular biology. The goal of the laboratory portion of the course is to give students a hands-on experience that reinforces the concepts covered in the lecture portion of the course, as well as learning basic laboratory techniques. BIO 106 is a required course for all Biology majors, as well as some other majors, and a prerequisite for many upper level courses in the Biology Department.
My Course Description: Biology has always been one of my favorite courses to take. I love everything about it, there is just so much to learn in Biology. This class in particular is one of my favorite classes all year because I am learning a lot about cellular/ molecular biology (where everything began!). This course is challenging and keeps me on my toes but it helps that it keeps my attention as well.
- Lab write-ups are very difficult especially if you don’t know what you’re doing. Luckily, I have had practice with lab write-ups before (primarily in highschool). Now, that’s not to say I’m an expert at writing one because by no means am I! But lab write-ups, in my opinion, are enjoyable in that they help you to think outside of the box or think about a specific topic in a new light (that maybe you didn’t think of before). The Osmosis lab write-up was my favorite write-up this year not only because I enjoyed writing it and learning about the process of osmosis, but the lab itself was fun. In this lab we analyzed the process of Osmosis using dyalisis tubing and different solutions containing fructose sugar (that the tubes were placed in). Seeing the outcome of the experiment was really cool and to know that processes like these happen everyday in the human body is mind-blowing and so intereseting to me.
