Around the age of six I began reading Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. I remember this incident distinctively because Green Eggs and Ham was one of the first books I was comfortable reading by myself, and it was also very enjoyable to me at the time. It all began at my grandparents’ house. I remember it being a weekend night, probably Sunday (the usual day my family gets together to have dinner with one another), and I just remember finding Green Eggs and Ham and reading it in the living room on the couch.
After I read the book to myself, I remember being so proud that I wanted to share it with someone else. So, I proceeded to go around the house and ask everyone who was there if they wanted to hear me read it. First, I read to my parents and my aunt Jen. Later that night I remember reading to my grandparents.
I think this memory stands out so clearly because, being able to read Green Eggs and Ham independently was such a great achievement for me at the time, it also helped that my family was just as proud of me as I was of myself. Furthermore, having the ability to comprehend the words and follow along with what the story was saying was so enticing and rewarding. Green Eggs and Ham paved a path for my reading career and left me wanting to read more.
